Summary of the Autumn:
The NWS conducted its Autumn of Servicefrom September 1 through November 30, 2024. This was our 14th year of giving back. During, this Autumn of Service...
20 NWS employees & 5family members participated in it.
5 organizationsduring the Autumn of 2024.
This included:

Below is a listing of the various activities held during it.
NWS Food Drive Competition:
Like in past years, the NWS Food Drive Competition was held during it. It covered any 31-day period in meteorological autumn.There were 49 food drives conducted during 2023. These were conducted by 46 NWS WFOs (4 more than in 2022), 5RFCs, 3CWSUs, Central Region Headquarters, National Water Center, Aviation Weather Center, and NWS Training Center. A total of 8,239.1 lbs of food and 952.5 other items were donated to local food banks. Another$4,436.63 in monetary donations was donated directlyto these local food banks.
Some Other Activities Included:
- An NWS La Crosse, WI meteorologist is currerntly knitting hats for 2 local neonatal units. These will be delivered in December.

Office Activities during the NWS Autumn of Service
Below are some of the activities that were done across the United States and its territories during the 2024NWS Autumn of Service:
La Crosse, WI WFO:[top] | Food Drive, PopTabs, Knitted Hats, & Adopted a Family for Christmas | ||||
On September 7, NWS La Crosse will be hosting an Open House. They have invited WAFER to collect food and monetary donations during it. During their 12food drives since 2013, a total of 1,354 lbs and $3,853 have been donated to WAFER. In addition to this, one of their staff members and his wife volunteer regularly at WAFER.
One of their staff members is currently knitting hats for their 2 local neonatal units. Since 2009, he has knitted and donated 5,332 hats for neonatal units, domestic abuse shelters, cancer hospitals, and the Minnesota Masonic Children Masonic Hospital. These hats were distributed in Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
